Brightwood was founded in the early 19th century and was originally known as "Madison Mills." The community was renamed to "Brightwood" in 1873, after the completion of the Brightwood Presbyterian Church. Brightwood has a rich history and heritage, and is home to several historic buildings, including the Brightwood Presbyterian Church, the Brightwood Schoolhouse, and the Brightwood Mill.
