The town was founded in 1851 by German immigrants and named after the city of Bremen in Germany. The town is home to a number of historical sites, including the Bremen Historical Society Museum and the Bremen Opera House. The town also hosts a number of annual events, including the Bremen Bluegrass Festival and the Bremen Old Settlers' Day.
