Brănişca is a commune in Hunedoara County, Romania, situated in the Hațeg Depression, at an altitude of 232 m, with a population of 1,325. The commune is composed of three villages: Brănișca, Pui and Subcetate. The area has a temperate climate, with average temperatures ranging from -1°C in January to 22°C in July. The commune has a rich history, dating back to the Roman period, when it was known as Praetorium. In the Middle Ages, it was a fortified town, and in the 15th century, it was the site of a battle between the Hungarian and Ottoman armies. The commune has a number of historical monuments, including the ruins of the Praetorium fortress, the Subcetate fortified church, and the Pui Orthodox church.
