Brakel is a town in the Höxter district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located on the Nethe river, approximately 20 kilometers southwest of Höxter. The town has a population of around 17,000 people. The climate in Brakel is temperate, with average temperatures ranging from 0°C in January to 20°C in July. The town has a rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in 1036 as "Brakele". In the 13th century, Brakel was granted town rights by the Bishop of Paderborn. The town was a member of the Hanseatic League from 1364 to 1669. Brakel has a number of historical buildings, including the 13th-century St. Peter's Church and the 16th-century Town Hall.
