The city experiences a humid continental climate with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Beslan has a rich history, having been founded in the 18th century as a Cossack settlement. It is known for its tragic 2004 Beslan school hostage crisis, where Chechen terrorists seized a school, resulting in the deaths of over 300 people, including 186 children. The city's heritage is reflected in its historical landmarks, including the Beslan Memorial Cemetery and the Beslan Museum of Local History.
