Bernalda is a town in the province of Matera, in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. It is located in the heart of the Bradano Valley, on the slopes of the Murgia Materana, at an altitude of 101 meters above sea level. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The average annual temperature is 15.6°C (60.1°F). Bernalda has a long and rich history, dating back to the Neolithic period. It was first mentioned in the 11th century as a fief of the Norman lord Robert Guiscard. In the 13th century, it became part of the Kingdom of Naples, and in the 15th century, it was acquired by the Orsini family. In the 17th century, Bernalda was granted the title of city by King Philip IV of Spain. The city's heritage is evident in its many historical buildings, including the Castle of Bernalda, the Church of Santa Maria della Neve, and the Palazzo Margherita.
