Berja, Andalusia, Spain is a municipality located in the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. The municipality is situated in the Alpujarra Almeriense comarca, on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at an altitude of 370 meters above sea level. The town is located on the N-340a road, which connects Almería with Granada. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot summers and mild winters. The average temperature is 18.5 °C (65.3 °F) and the average annual precipitation is 470 mm (18.5 in). Berja has a rich history, dating back to the Roman era. The town was founded by the Romans in the 1st century BC, and was known as Vergium. The town was later conquered by the Moors in the 8th century, and remained under Muslim rule until the 15th century. Berja was reconquered by the Christians in 1489, and became part of the Kingdom of Castile. The town was granted the title of city by King Philip IV in 1630. Berja has a rich cultural heritage, which includes several churches, convents, and other historical buildings. The town is also home to several museums, including the Museo Arqueológico de Berja, which houses a collection of archaeological artifacts from the region.
