The town was founded in 1890 and is named after the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, which is located nearby. Beltsville has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The town is home to a number of historical sites, including the Montpelier Mansion and the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.
