The municipality covers an area of 272.7 km² and has a population of 1,537 (2020). The climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. Belchite has a rich history, dating back to the Roman era. The town was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and was rebuilt in the 1940s. The town is home to a number of historical monuments, including the ruins of the old town and the new town, which was built in the 1940s.
