Bassillac, formerly known as Basilak, is a commune in the Dordogne department in southwestern France. It is located in the Aquitaine region, about 10 km (6 mi) northeast of Périgueux. The commune has a population of around 1,800 people. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers. The history of Bassillac dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was a fortified town. The town was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War, but it was rebuilt in the 15th century. Bassillac is home to a number of historical monuments, including the Château de Bassillac, the Église Saint-Martin, and the Fontaine Saint-Jean.
