Baltar is a municipality in the province of Ourense, in the autonomous community of Galicia, Spain. It is located in the southern part of the province, bordering the provinces of Pontevedra and Zamora. The municipality has a population of 1,064 inhabitants (2019) and an area of 92.3 km². The climate is temperate, with an average annual temperature of 13.5 °C (56.3 °F) and an average annual rainfall of 1,100 mm (43.3 in). The municipality is crossed by the Miño River. The history of Baltar dates back to the Roman era, when it was known as Aquae Balneariae. The municipality was part of the Kingdom of Galicia from the 9th century until the 19th century. The municipality is home to several historical monuments, including the Church of Santa María de Baltar, the Castle of Baltar, and the Monastery of San Salvador de Baltar.
