Balashov, Saratov Oblast, Russia, is a city located in the southeast of the European part of Russia, on the Khoper River, 212 km east of Saratov. The city has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. The average temperature in July is 21.5 °C, and the average temperature in January is -11.5 °C. Balashov was founded in 1656 as a fortress on the southern border of the Russian Empire. The city played an important role in the development of the Volga region and was a major center of trade and commerce. Today, Balashov is a modern city with a population of over 80,000 people. The city is home to a number of historical and cultural attractions, including the Balashov Museum of Local Lore, the Balashov Art Gallery, and the Balashov Drama Theater.
