Ávila de los Caballeros, also known as Ávila, is a historic walled city located in the autonomous community of Castile and León in central Spain. It is situated at an altitude of 1,131 meters (3,711 feet) above sea level, on the northern slopes of the Sierra de Gredos mountains. The city has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Ávila has a rich history dating back to the 11th century, when it was founded by the Castilian king Alfonso VI. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985.
