The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Atoka was founded in 1872 as a railroad town and served as the county seat of Atoka County from 1907 to 1913. The city is home to the Atoka County Historical Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts and documents related to the city's history.
