Aşkale is a town and district of Erzurum Province in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. It is located in the northwest of the province, bordering the provinces of Erzincan and Bayburt. The town has a population of 18,843 (as of 2019) and is situated at an altitude of 1,540 meters (5,050 feet) above sea level. The climate is continental, with cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers. Aşkale has a rich history and heritage, dating back to the ancient period. The town was founded by the Armenians in the 10th century and was known as Arakel. It was later conquered by the Seljuk Turks in the 11th century and became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Aşkale is home to several historical sites, including the Arakel Church, the Seljuk Caravanserai, and the Ottoman Mosque.
