Altenberge is a town in the district of Steinfurt in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located approximately 7 kilometers west of Steinfurt and 20 kilometers north of Münster. The town has a population of around 10,000 people. The average temperature in Altenberge is 9.5 degrees Celsius, and the average annual precipitation is 780 millimeters. Altenberge was first mentioned in a document in 1032. The town was granted market rights in 1343. In the 16th century, Altenberge became a center of the Anabaptist movement. The town was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War. After the war, Altenberge was rebuilt and became a prosperous town. In the 19th century, Altenberge became a center of the textile industry. The town's heritage includes the St. Martin's Church, which was built in the 12th century, and the Altenberge Castle, which was built in the 16th century.
