Alexandru Ioan Cuza, also known as Cuza-Voda, was the first ruler of the united Romanian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia. Cuza was born in Bârlad, Moldavia, on March 20, 1820. He studied law in Paris and returned to Romania in 1848 to participate in the Wallachian Revolution. After the revolution failed, Cuza was exiled to Turkey. In 1859, he was elected as the ruler of Moldavia and Wallachia. Cuza's reign was marked by a series of reforms, including the abolition of serfdom, the establishment of a modern education system, and the adoption of a new constitution. He also played a key role in the unification of the Romanian Principalities in 1862. Cuza was overthrown in a coup d'état in 1866 and died in exile in Vienna in 1873.
