The city has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Ada was founded in 1889 as a railroad town and named after Ada McKinley, the wife of President William McKinley. The city is home to East Central University and the Chickasaw Cultural Center, which celebrates the history and heritage of the Chickasaw Nation.
