The city is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 10 and State Highway 97, approximately 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Wausau. The city has a population of 2,310 as of the 2020 census. The city was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from New York and Pennsylvania. The city was named after Sir Walter Scott's novel, "The Abbot." The city is home to a number of businesses and industries, including a number of manufacturing companies. The city is also home to a number of churches, schools, and parks.
