  • May 31, 1916: World War I: The Battle of Jutland takes place in the North Sea between the British Royal Navy's Grand Fleet and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet. It is the only large-scale clash of battleships during the war. The result is tactically inconclusive, but British dominance of the North Sea is maintained.
