He received his basic and secondary education in Amman before obtaining a government scholarship to study refining and petroleum engineering at Baku University in Azerbaijan. While studying, he began trading computers and cars, later expanding into yellow phosphorus, timber, and oil products. In the mid-1990s, he acquired a construction factory in Tyumen to build housing for Gazprom workers. In 2015, Forbes estimated his wealth at $1.1 billion, placing him on their list of the world's billionaires.
