Born in 1933 in Yongjia County near Wenzhou, he initially pursued geological studies but shifted his focus to linguistics, despite not attending a university for that purpose. He developed his theories on Old Chinese phonetics during his time working in dialect surveys and later refined his ideas independently, contributing to a six-vowel system. He became a member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1980.
