Yuanshu Yan (July 3, 1933 – December 26, 2012) was a notable literary figure from Chaling, Hunan. He was born in Nanjing during the Republic of China and graduated from the Taiwan University in 1956 with a degree in Foreign Languages. He furthered his studies in the United States, earning a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from the University of Wisconsin. Yan established Taiwan's first Ph.D. program in Comparative Literature and founded influential literary magazines such as 'Chinese and Foreign Literature' and 'Tamkang Review' in 1972.
