Yuan T. Lee is a Taiwanese-American chemist born on November 19, 1936, in Hsinchu, Taiwan. He earned his BS from National Taiwan University in 1959, followed by an MS from National Tsing Hua University in 1961, and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965. Lee returned to Berkeley in 1974 as a chemistry professor and became a U.S. citizen that same year. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1979. He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1986 and played a significant role in Taiwanese politics in 2000.
