Yuan Chengye was a prominent Chinese organic chemist born in 1924 in Shangyu, Zhejiang province. He completed his studies at National College of Pharmacy in 1948 and continued his education in Moscow, earning a Degree for Candidate for D.Sc in 1955. Returning to China, he worked at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry and led important research in nuclear fuel extractants starting in 1958. In recognition of his contributions to science, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997 and passed away on January 9, 2018.
