Yuan-Cheng Bertram Fung, known as Bert, was an influential American engineer and a pioneer in the field of biomechanics. Born on September 15, 1919, in Changzhou, he studied at Nanjing University and earned his Ph.D. at Caltech under Ernest Sechler. Fung developed material laws for biological tissues and was a professor at UC San Diego. He received several accolades, including the Von Karman Medal and the National Medal of Science, and was a prominent member of several scientific academies. He was married since 1949 and had two children.
