He was recognized as a Living National Treasure for his mastery of the Maki-e technique, which involves the application of gold and silver dust. Taguchi specialized in both Maki-e and the use of mother-of-pearl inlay, creating contemporary lacquerware focused on themes of flora and fauna. He passed away on November 28, 1998.
