Yoshihisa Maitani was a Japanese camera designer known for his work at Olympus, especially the development of the PEN series and the OM system. He built his first camera at age ten and held four patents by sixteen. Maitani played a significant role in camera development at Olympus, leading to the sale of over 17 million PEN cameras and the award-winning Olympus XA. He retired in 1996 but continued as a consultant, receiving several awards, including from the Photographic Society of Japan. He passed away on July 30, 2009, from respiratory failure.
