Yon Etxaide, born in 1920 in Donostia, was a prominent Basque writer known for his contributions to the Basque language and culture. He was the son of Ignacio Maria Etxaide, president of Euskaltzaindia. A delineator by profession, he was imprisoned for six months for carrying copies of the magazine Gernika. After the war, he taught Basque secretly. His play Amayur deals with the struggles for Navarre's independence. He became a corresponding member of Euskaltzaindia in 1956 and an honorary member in 1991. In 1959, he translated Pio Baroja's work, Les inquietuds de Shanti Andia.
