She specialized in breaststroke events and represented Papua New Guinea at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney at the age of 17. Peni made history as the first female flag bearer for her nation during the opening ceremony. At the Olympics, she competed in the women's 100 m breaststroke but did not advance to the semifinals, finishing thirty-ninth overall in the prelims with a time of 1:19.62.
