William Paton Cleland (30 May 1912 – 29 March 2005) was an Australian physician in Britain known for his contributions to cardiac surgery. In the late 1950s, he developed open-heart surgery techniques and co-invented the heart-lung machine in 1952 with Dennis Melrose. They first used this pioneering technology on humans in 1953, after extensive animal testing. Cleland's work significantly advanced cardiac surgery, improving outcomes for patients with heart conditions.
