He served as the chairman of the youth organization 'Ernst Thälmann' from 1985 to 1989, promoting socialist values among the youth. Later, from 1989 to 1990, he held the position of Secretary of State in the Modrow government, which was known for its attempt at reform during the transitional period leading to German reunification.
