He was the first Igbo individual to be educated at London's Trinity College of Music and the first African to earn a music education degree in the United States, receiving his PhD from Michigan State University in 1963. Echezona taught music at various educational levels, emphasizing choral music development and promoting the works of young Nigerian lyricists.
