After completing his degree in electrical engineering, he earned a doctorate in oceanography at the University of Kiel in 1969. His research focused on Mediterranean water in the North Atlantic and included studies on deep currents in the South Atlantic and ocean fronts in the Southern Hemisphere. He also developed electronic devices for oceanography, such as flow measurement tools and CTD rosettes.
