He played as a versatile forward in the top-tier Fußball-Oberliga Nord from 1947 until 1958, representing Eintracht Braunschweig and Hamburger SV. Over 214 league matches, he scored 82 goals. Schemel reached the finals of the DFB-Pokal in 1956 and the German Championship in 1957 with Hamburger SV. He passed away on February 9, 2004.
