Walter Kohn (March 9, 1923 - April 19, 2016) was an Austrian-born American chemist and physicist known for his work in theoretical chemistry. He completed his bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics at the University of Toronto in 1945 and earned a master's degree in applied mathematics in 1946. Kohn received his doctorate in physics from Harvard University in 1948. He taught at Carnegie Mellon University from 1950 to 1960, then at the University of California, San Diego until 1979, and later at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1984 onwards. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1998.
