Walter Joachim was a prominent Québec cellist known for his solo and chamber music performances and teaching. Born on May 5, 1912, in Düsseldorf and later moving to Canada in 1952, he became the principal cellist of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Joachim co-founded the Montreal String Quartet and taught at the Montreal Conservatory for over 25 years. Despite battling Parkinson's disease in the 1980s, he contributed significantly to music education, mentoring over 30 professional cellists. Honored as a Knight of the Order of Quebec and a member of the Order of Canada, he passed away on December 20, 2001.
