Walter Martin Hasenfus was an American canoeist born on March 18, 1916, in Needham. He competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin alongside his younger brother Joseph in the canoe double (C-2) over 10,000 meters, finishing fifth. With the onset of World War II, Hasenfus served in the 307th Infantry Regiment, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. He died in action on December 8, 1944, and is interred at the Manila American Cemetery.
