Walter Gottlieb Land is a renowned German surgeon, recognized for his pioneering work in transplantation medicine and immunology. He played a significant role in promoting postmortem organ donation by establishing the 'Munich Model' in 1977/78, which increased the availability of donor organs and was adopted by transplant centers across Germany. In 1979, he performed the first pancreas transplant, and in 1994, he completed the first living donor kidney transplant for a couple in Germany.
