Wladimir Alexandrowitsch Magnitsky was a prominent Russian geodesist and geophysicist, born on June 12, 1915, in Pensa and died on October 16, 2005, in Moscow. After graduating in 1940 from the Moscow Institute of Geodesy, Aerophotogrammetry and Cartography, he began teaching there and later led the Department of Geophysics at Lomonosov University. He was known in the West for his textbook on the Earth's figure theory and conducted significant research on the impact of geological density anomalies on the gravitational field. In 1971, he received the prestigious Otto Juljewitsch Schmidt Prize from the USSR Academy of Sciences.
