Vladimir Mikhailovich Komarov (March 16, 1927 - April 24, 1967) was a Soviet cosmonaut who became the first person to die during a space mission on Soyuz 1. Born in Moscow, USSR (now Russia), he was selected as a cosmonaut in 1960 and flew his first mission on Vostok 1, as a backup for Pavel Popovich. Tragically, during his second flight on Soyuz 1, he lost his life due to a parachute failure. Komarov was a recipient of the Hero of the Soviet Union title and the Order of Lenin twice. An asteroid, 1836 Komarov, is named in his honor.
