Vladimir Ashkenazy is a renowned Russian pianist and conductor, born on July 6, 1937, in Nizhny Novgorod, Soviet Union. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and gained recognition by placing second at the 1955 International Frederick Chopin Competition. He won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 1956 and, in 1962, shared the first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Ashkenazy served as the music director for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1987 to 1994 and was the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic from 1998 to 2003.
