Vladislovas Česiūnas was a Soviet sprint canoeist born on March 15, 1940, in Vyšnialaukis, Lithuania. He had a successful career, winning one Olympic medal and six medals at canoe world championships. His life took a dramatic turn during the 1979 World Championships in Duisburg when he defected to Germany. Afterwards, he was apprehended by KGB agents and forcibly returned to the Soviet Union for his actions. Česiūnas is remembered both for his athletic achievements and the political implications of his defection.
