Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen (1909-1957) was a Danish painter known for his work in both abstract and figurative surrealism. Born in Frederiksberg, he was the son of Carl V. Petersen, an art critic. Bjerke-Petersen had a notable artistic collaboration with his wife Elsa Thoresen until their divorce in 1953, and later with actress Eva-Lisa Lennartsson. His definition of surrealism evolved significantly, reflecting the controversies of the international surrealist movement, which led to a split with fellow artists. He also published books and articles on abstract and surrealist art.
