Vida Chenoweth (1928-2018) was a pioneering solo classical marimbist, ethnomusicologist, and linguist. She was noted for performing polyphonic music on the marimba, comparable to what Pablo Casals and Andrés Segovia achieved for the cello and guitar, respectively. Chenoweth made her debut in 1956, performed in Carnegie Hall, and toured extensively. After a hand injury, she shifted focus to mission work, studying musicology and translating the Bible while serving in New Guinea. She remains a key figure in marimba history for her contributions to transforming its repertoire and performance techniques.
