Vernell Myers Coleman (1918-1990) was a notable community organizer in Phoenix, Arizona, affectionately known as 'Mother Coleman' and referred to as the 'mayor' of the Matthew Henson Projects. She played a significant role in reviving the celebration of Juneteenth. In recognition of her contributions, she became the first African American woman to be inducted into the Arizona Women's Hall of Fame in 1990.
