Vergílio Ferreira (1916 - 1996) was a prominent Portuguese novelist and a key figure in the existentialist movement in Portugal. Initially influenced by the new realism, his first novel 'The Long Way' reflected this style. However, with the publication of 'The Turning Point' in 1949, he departed from realism, embracing French existentialism in subsequent works including 'Appearance,' 'Lost Morning,' 'Silent Joy,' and 'Forever.' His novel 'Appearance' earned the French Femina Literary Prize and the Euro-Palestinian Award from a European jury specializing in Portuguese literature.
