He completed his high school education in Ljubljana, studied at the University of Belgrade, and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Zagreb with a dissertation focused on power and responsibility in the workplace. Rus was a sociology professor at the University of Ljubljana and served as a visiting professor at various institutions, including the Free University of Berlin. He became a full member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1995.
