Veljko Kadijević was the former Chief of the General Staff of the Yugoslav People's Army and served as Minister of Defense of the Yugoslav government from 1988 until his resignation in 1992. He was the de facto leader of the Yugoslav People's Army during the Ten-Day War in Slovenia and the early stages of the Croatian War. Born in 1925 in what is now Croatia to a Serbian father and Croatian mother, he joined the Communist Party in 1942 and remained active in the military until retirement, later seeking political asylum in Russia.
