Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov (January 30, 1926 - August 19, 1998) was a Soviet Navy officer credited with voting against a nuclear strike during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His single dissent was pivotal, as it averted a potential nuclear war that could have led to catastrophic global consequences. As the second-in-command aboard the diesel submarine B-59, Arkhipov refused to authorize the captain to launch nuclear torpedoes against the US Navy, a decision that required agreement from all three senior officers on board. In 2002, Thomas Blanton described Arkhipov as having 'saved the world.'
